U-HACKATHON 1.0 was the first and one of its kind event organised by the School of Computer Science of the University of Petroleum and Energy Studies and considering the fact that we had had no prior experience of organising such an event, the turnout for U-HACKATHON 1.0 was tremendous. The first round saw the participation of over 240 teams from various renowned technology institutions from all over India which conglomerated to 44 teams in round two. This two-day event was the ultimate test of patience, grit, determination and skill of the young coders taking part in the event. ,The event was inaugurated by Mr. Amit Kumar Shukla, Director of the Information Technology and Development Agency, Uttarakhand on 28 March in the presence of various experts from companies such as IBM; Deloitte; Xebia; Amptech Software, among others. The teams were given problems based on real life to enable the participants to think of real-world solutions. As stated by “Event Convener” Dr TP Singh-Head, Dept. of Informatics, SOCS- “Out of the box ideas alone can solve the modern-day problems and create a sustainable world” and indeed this was kept in mind during the brainstorming session of the UHACKATHON. One main purpose of this event was to let the students get an experience of the problems they will be tasked to solve when they will become Engineers of the Twenty Second century. ,The panel of judges comprised of Manjit Singh – Project Head, IBM, India as the Head, Technical Judge ‘U Hackathon’; Divyanshu Sinha – Project Coordinator, Xebia India; Naveen Srivastava – MD, Amptech Software; Mukul Kashiv – Sr. Data Analyst, Deloitte; Alok Negi – Assistant Professor, Quantum University, and T Dharani Kumar – Industry Fellow, SCS UPES. The solutions developed by the young participants included a ‘Smart Stick for Assisting the visually impaired’, an ‘Obstruction detection system’ for improving road safety, a ‘Smart Irrigation System’ and ‘Smart Portals and apps’. ,In the ensuing battle for code supremacy, Team Jaypee Institute of Information and Technology(Noida) emerged victorious with the all-girls team of Indira Gandhi Delhi Technical University for Women(Delhi) coming closely behind at the second position followed Team UPES securing the third and fourth positions and Team Global Academy of Technology(Bengaluru) the fifth. ,Besides the cash prizes and the gift hampers from Xebia, participants were also offered internships by the companies present during the competition based on their skills and talent. Amptech Software went so far as to offering internship opportunities to three participants during the HACKATHON itself.,The exposure to such an environment where quick, efficient and real time solutions to problems were the necessity; really brought out the true coder inside everyone. ,The competition was a life enriching experience for everyone involved all due to the hard work, efforts and the can-do attitude of the Organising Committee and its sub-committees (Logistics, VFX, Editorial, Modelling, Technical and PR). The students as well as the faculties coordination and harmony was at par to an event like the Mangalyaan mission. This really is testimonial to the success of UHACKATHON1.0 and to the fact that we at UPES have the stars as our limit.,And once again we are back at it with double the zest, double the excitement and double the competition with the UHACKATHON 2.0. With UHACKATHON 2.0, we have once again set up our goal to exceed everyone’s expectations by a landslide. , So roll up your sleeves and get ready for the Championship of the Coders. ,, ,
